Milk n' Cookies Sweets Table

Cookies are made of butter and love.
-Norwegian Proverb

This stylized photo shoot by Love and Lavender is fantastic.  These ladies did such a great setting the scene for a Milk n' Cookies themed sweets table.  It's not likely that a party or reception will be hosted in an alfalfa field, but for a photo shoot this location was the perfect setting.  The concept is so simple, yet a few detailed touches go a long way in making "utterly" fabulous.

Old scraps of wood and white acrylic paint are all you need to create a custom labels like the ones above.  It's dirt cheap and really ties in with the many wood elements incorporated in the table.

This cake topper is so precious.  Using only two hard boiled eggs, part of an egg carton, markers, a mini hair flower and bow tie, you too can have this super cute topper.  You can include the wooden heart or any other wooden cut out, found at Michael's or JoAnn Fabrics, to customize your topper to your liking.

The milk stand included Strawberry, Chocolate and Regular milk.  I'm loving these mason jar dispensers!

Accessory pieces like the "Recipe for Love" and recipe cards doubling as the guest book are a great way to put a twist on traditional elements found at a reception.

These favors are milk bottles with layers of ingredients for chocolate chip oatmeal cookies.  Love it!

This ring shot is so perfect (and yummy!)

Have a wonderful weekend.

Cotton Candy? Yes, Please!!

That's right!  I did it.  I am now the proud owner of my very own cotton candy maker.  This 1900's carnival style cotton candy cart in bubble gum pink is mine!  I was so excited when I saw it and was jumping for joy when I brought it home.  My brain is spinning thinking about all the ways I plan to incorporate freshly made cotton candy into my designs for Sweet Nothings.  Cotton candy is a timeless candy and such a hot trend right now in weddings, birthdays and special events.  I'm so thrilled that Sweet Nothings will soon be able to offer cotton candy packages to our customers.

I'd like to give a big thanks to everyone who has expressed such kind words and support for my new business, especially over the past few weeks.  Sweet Nothings has so many great things in the works, I can't wait to share them all with you.  But for now, I'll be dreaming of fluffy clouds of candy...

Beautiful Pedestals

{Photo courtesy of Bliss Event Planning}

I am down right smitten with these gorgeous Hobnail cake pedestals.  They dress up any dessert or candy and add such character to any Sweets Table they grace.  The colors vary from pinks, blues, green, milk white, amber, blues and so many more.  The choices are endless.

A few of these pedestals are on my wish list.  I just need to make sure my husband remembers how much I love them and how happy finding one at home would make me!

If you are looking for a place to buy one of your own, check out Sweet & Saucy's New Supply Store.  They offer a wide selection of cake stands, platters and bowls, domes, and cupcake liners.  I wish I had free reign on the whole place.  I would  have a field day picking out each and every item I ever wanted.

One of the sweetest occasions in life are weddings.  It's a day filled with love, happiness, excitement and a fabulous party.  With all of that sweetness, it's completely fitting to incorporate candy into the big day.  And yes, I love candy weddings!!  It's a fantastic way to add a bit of whimsy, fun and color to the reception.  Your guests will love their fun favors and your photographer will have a field day with the candy ring shots!

And the Winner is...

Leslie West & Brayan Krepley

In need of a name for my new business designing custom candy stations and dessert tables, I reached out to my Facebook family for help.  Being as though I prefer to call my designs "Sweets Tables", I asked my friends, using the word "Sweet", to come up with a catchy name.  I was shocked at the numerous responses received.  Thank you all SOOOO much for your ideas and support.  I loved each and every one of them.  They were all fabulous!  But one suggestion, coincidently made by two people, really hit home....

So, without further adieu, my new business name is......

To kick off the launch of the new business, Sweet Nothings will be displaying an eco-friendly Sweets Table at The Dandelion Patch in Vienna, VA.  On Monday, January 17th, The Dandelion Patch will be hosting best-selling author Kate Harrison as she shares "10 Simple Ways to Green Your Wedding."  Kate is the author of the best-selling green wedding book The Green Bride Guide: How to Plan an Earth-friendly Wedding on Any Budget.  Sweet Nothings will be on display with an eco-friendly Sweets Table showcasing the way we contribute to being Earth friendly.

Thank you again to each one of you who offered such great suggestions and ideas for my business.  I am certain that there will have many more creative ideas I will need your help with.  Until then...

And to Leslie and Brayan, your gifts will be sent out this week!

Be Sweet.

Caregiver interventions crucial in treating Alzheimer's and dementia

With a new year, comes new innovations in the healthcare industry. The New York Times reports that recent research is stressing the importance of caregiving to those with Alzheimer’s. With no effective treatment for Alzheimer’s, dementia therapy comes from caregiving performed by families, or at nursing homes.
“There’s actually better evidence and more significant results in caregiver interventions than there is in anything to treat this disease so far” -- Lisa P. Gwyther, education director for the Bryan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Duke University.
Research suggests that creating positive emotional experiences for Alzheimer’s patients reduces distress and behavior problems. Emotions exist even after cognition deteriorates, so changing things like food, art, exercise, or the aesthetics of a room can generate positive emotions. The Journal of the American Medical Association found that brightening lights in dementia facilities decreased depression and cognitive deterioration.

Additionally, the research is stressing the importance of a caregiver’s emotional state, so much that agencies are developing programs to provide caregivers with education and emotional support. This type of support is not only beneficial to the caregivers themselves, but to their patients as well.

Home Care Assistance similarly stresses the importance of emotional support to both the patient and the caregiver. This type of innovative research is an exciting start to 2011. Hopefully we will continue to see even greater breakthroughs in the treatment of those with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
